About Alumen

Hello, I'm Linda and I wanted to start Alumen following my own experience of bereavement when my mother Phyllis died in September 2002.

Mum had been ill with cancer for several years and so her passing was not unexpected, but I found the feeling of loss and the gap in my life overwhelming. Although we lived some distance apart I had spoken to her over the phone almost every day; chatting about family, what the children had been up to at school, what was happening at the weekend and so on, and suddenly she was no longer there.

Although I had lost my Mum I had also lost a friend, a confidant and someone I could share the ups and downs of daily life with. My husband and children were there and they were great, loving and very supportive, but they could not replace my Mum.

I found the grief difficult, particularly in the first year when an anniversary or special day came around, Mothers Day, Christmas Day, her birthday and wedding

anniversary, and it was at times like these that I wanted a focal point for my feelings. I looked for something suitable but couldn't find anything that I felt reflected how precious and valuable Mum still was to me, so I decided to create my own. I found lighting a candle meant a lot to me and was helpful, honouring Mum's memory and connecting with her in some way - and I still light a candle today when I want to feel close to her or want to talk. Friends saw my memorial, liked it and wanted them too, and things have grown from there.
